Facility management (FM) often operates behind the curtain, ensuring our workplaces, schools, hospitals, and public spaces function properly. On World FM Day, it's time to spotlight the dedicated professionals who keep our environment safe, efficient, and welcoming.

Global Journeys, Local Impact

We’ve gotten to know many fascinating facility management professionals through our Women in Facilities series, and we’ve learned that FM professionals come from diverse backgrounds, each bringing memorable experiences to the table:

  • Christa DoDoo is from Ghana and has managed facilities across Washington, DC, Rome, and Vienna. Now, as Chief of Facilities and Infrastructure for the World Food Programme, she ensures operations run smoothly on a global scale.
  • Laura Berrio-Sanchez left from the vibrant landscapes of Colombia for the bustling streets of Manhattan. Her journey in FM is marked by innovation and a commitment to excellence.
  • MJ Manju moved from India to the U.S. in 2017 to pursue a master's in facility management. Her dedication to mastering industry best practices has solidified her place in the FM community.
  • Aykean Forde, from Trinidad and Tobago, serves as the Facilities Director at the International School of Port of Spain. She mentors professionals worldwide, embodying the spirit of global collaboration.
  • Beatriz Muñoz grew up in Juarez, Mexico, working in her family's businesses. Her deep-rooted understanding of operations has been instrumental in her FM career.

The Numbers Speak Volumes

Facility management isn't just about fixing what's broken; it's about proactive strategies that yield tangible results:

  • Proactive FM programs can lead to 50% fewer safety incidents compared to reactive approaches.
  • Strategic maintenance can reduce equipment downtime by up to 45% and extend asset life by up to 40%.
  • Companies with robust FM programs often see 15–20% reductions in operational costs annually.
  • A significant 75% of FM professionals report that their work directly impacts employee productivity and well-being.

Facing the Talent Challenge

As the FM industry evolves, attracting and retaining talent takes center stage:

  • 61% of FM leaders identify talent acquisition and retention as major challenges.
  • Only 26% of FM professionals are under the age of 35, highlighting the need for outreach and mentorship.

Business consultant Randy Olson said, "It’s a building wrapped around people. People and facilities are the organization’s two most expensive assets." He envisions a future where FM and HR collaborate to enhance workplace environments and employee satisfaction.

A Heartfelt Thank You

On this World FM Day, let's extend our gratitude to the facility management professionals who work diligently to ensure our environments are safe, sustainable, and conducive to success. Their behind-the-scenes efforts make a world of difference.
