Tom Satterly knows what it’s like to have someone create an opening on a team. Eight years ago, he was in this position. Today, he’s departing from a role he filled and is confident the new “Tom” will bring creativity and value to the role, in addition to construction, facility management and communication skills.
Tom retired from a distinguished career in facilities management, most notably serving as the Associate Vice President of Facilities Management at Colorado State University (CSU). Satterly's journey to this role was marked by significant experiences, including a 22-year career in the US Navy and a leadership position at the University of Georgia.
Satterly's tenure at CSU was defined by his commitment to sustainability and teamwork. His leadership approach was grounded in the belief that successful facilities management relies on strong communication, trust, and partnership. "The diversity of work is what kept my job interesting," Satterly reflects, emphasizing his pride in contributing to a facilities team that prioritizes sustainable practices and a positive work culture.
After announcing his retirement, Satterly embarked on a memorable trip to Portugal with friends. The experience allowed him to explore the country's rich history, scenic landscapes, and warm hospitality. This adventure was a fitting start to his retirement, offering a brief pause before he decides on his next steps.
Satterly's professional journey in higher education facilities management began at the University of Georgia, where he served as Assistant Vice President of the Facilities Management Division. His role involved overseeing various aspects of the university's infrastructure, from athletic facilities to residential halls. The experience at Georgia, a university about twice the size of CSU, equipped him with valuable insights and skills that he later applied at CSU.
At the University of Georgia, Satterly was fortunate to work under a supportive boss who encouraged his professional development. This support allowed him to pursue an MBA while utilizing the GI Bill, further enhancing his expertise in the field. He also played a significant role in the construction of an on-campus stadium, a project he describes as one of the nation's top facilities.
When CSU offered Satterly the role of Associate Vice President of Facilities Management, he was drawn to the university's strong commitment to sustainability. This position allowed him to make a meaningful impact, particularly in renewable energy, aligning with his passion for creating sustainable facilities.
Satterly's leadership style is characterized by a team-based culture that values expertise across various disciplines, including architecture, construction, energy, and sustainability. He believes that effective facilities management requires a dynamic approach, where leaders must adapt to different roles based on the team's needs. This adaptability, combined with a commitment to celebrating success, has been central to his leadership philosophy.

You will learn to both follow and lead and depending on the situation take different roles based on the team’s needs. - Best practices to share include listening to both your internal clients, e.g., the university president, students, professors, researchers, athletics, and certainly your team.
