The Yale campus of St. Francis Hospital has continuously expanded and evolved since its inception in 1960. Over the span of six decades, this campus has burgeoned into a sprawling expanse of 2.5 million square feet, perpetually in a state of growth and adaptation. From its early stages to its current state, the institution has undergone multiple phases of construction, a mosaic of innovation reflecting the ethos of progression.
Mike Mullins, the Engineering Director, accentuates the vital importance of pre-emptive awareness in daily operations. “Knowing what is unfolding within our systems before addressing a situation is pivotal for our team,” Mike emphasized. He underscored the value of seamless access to data, particularly when troubleshooting or rectifying issues. “Equipping our team with tools that facilitate remote problem-solving and immediate data is invaluable to us,” he added.
Technological Integration in Daily Operations
Cassell Drew, the Engineering Department Coordinator, agreed, highlighting the transformative impact of technological integration. “The utilization of iPads by our staff has expedited emergency response within the hospital. It empowers them to swiftly locate critical points or vital information, transcending reliance on historical knowledge or hard-copy blueprints,” she explained.
“We recently completed new construction of a cath lab that you want to make sure is cold all the time,” said Mullins. “We got a call one morning a few months after we’d opened it up and the director of another facility on-site asked if we could warm the room up. He said, ‘We’ve got a baby that we need to take care of, and the baby doesn’t have enough body heat, so we really need to warm the room up.’”
Warmth, Humanity, and Real-Time Problem-Solving
Mike said, “We were able to warm the room up and fix the problem because the data that we needed to make the adjustment was available quickly. We did a catheterization on a baby that weighed one pound.”
“We recognize that what we’ve got here is a unique opportunity and miracles happen here regularly,” he said.
“Our long-standing employees possess invaluable experience and insights, but sharing this reservoir of information with newer staff members is a challenge,” said Engineering Manager John Tuttle. “I’m excited when I go out and see these guys who’ve been here for 30 years with a new tool in their hand that they’re utilizing daily.”

The ability to access pertinent information via an iPad eliminates unnecessary stops and significantly expedites critical tasks.”
